Tesla Powerwall 3 includes an integrated solar inverter - no separate inverter needed. One unit manages solar input, battery storage, and home power distribution.
One Powerwall 3 paired with one Expansion Unit delivers 27 kWh of usable battery storage - double the capacity of the base unit. This configuration is designed for homes with above-average energy consumption, electric vehicles, or properties in area service areas with frequent outages. A single Powerwall 3 handles the integrated solar inverter and system management; the Expansion Unit adds 13.5 kWh of pure storage. All units are managed as a single system through the Tesla App, with the same 11.5 kW continuous AC output regardless of how many Expansion Units are added.
The maximum Powerwall 3 configuration delivers 40.5 kWh of total usable storage across three units - one Powerwall 3 plus two Expansion Units. This system is designed for properties with the highest energy demands: large homes, properties with pool equipment or HVAC running continuously, multiple EV chargers, or clients in wildfire-adjacent areas of Los Angeles where multi-day grid outages are a real risk. At 40.5 kWh and 11.5 kW continuous output, this configuration can power essential loads for multiple days without solar recharge. All three units are managed as a single system through the Tesla App.
